In 1903, Katsutaro Kambara, the first president, started shipping business at Chitose-mura, Numakuma-gun, Hiroshima Pref. In June 1944, Setonaikai Senpaku Co., Ltd. was established and changed its name to Kambara Kisen Co., Ltd. in November 1948. Transportation of coal from Kyushu area was mainly performed at the beginning, then expanded our service to cover domestic ports carrying all kinds of freights.
We jointed Hokuyozai Freight Agreement in 1963 and Nanyozai Freight Agreement in 1968 to advance to adjacent sea. In 1967, we ordered Tensho Maru, our first vessel to order, to Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. to advance to ocean navigating service. Now, we obtain reliance from many customers and we are engaged in the freight traffic of the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean. Moreover, we provide many bulk carriers and pure car carriers to several operators worldwide as time charter.
On the other hand, the full container service connecting Japan, Saipan, Guam, Palau and Micronesia, which started in 1983, expanded its service from/to ports in East and Southeast Asia, Europe and Australia to contribute the local economy development. In 1994, we started the service between major Chinese ports and local ports in Japan. Since then we have expanded our service network, which currently covers the ports of Shanghai, Dalian, Qingdao, Xiamen and the Changjiang Valley in China and Japanese ports on the Seto-Inland Sea, the Japan Sea coast and Hokkaido.
